Malta's walking season runs from October to May, when the countryside is green and the cliffs are cool enough to walk.

    An easy walk from Simar along the Xemxija Heritage Trail to the Miżieb woodland and back through Wied il-Pwales. About two and a half hours.

  • Comino Nature Walk and Bird Ringing

    A Sunday morning on Comino with BirdLife Malta: an easy to moderate hike, a visit to Santa Marija Tower and bird ringing up close. The boat leaves Marfa at 07:00 sharp and it costs €15.

  • Sunset in Dingli

    Sunset at Dingli Cliffs

    Dingli

    Malta's highest point, with a clifftop road and the tiny Madalena chapel. Bring a drink and sit on the wall for the sunset. Bus 52 from Valletta, or park by the chapel.

  • Victoria Lines Malta

    Mosta

    A 12 km British fortification wall running along the Great Fault from Fomm ir-Riħ to Madliena. Do the Bingemma to Mosta section for forts, valleys and few people. Best from October to April.

    Malta's only national park, on the cliffs between Golden Bay and Anchor Bay. Marked trails, garigue flowers in spring and guided walks by the park team. Free, no shade.

    A wild grey pebble bay below Baħrija reached by a rough path down the cliff. Rarely more than a handful of people. Wear proper shoes and go in calm weather.

    Malta's only real woodland, planted by the Knights below Verdala Palace. Shady paths, orange groves and picnic spots. Lovely after rain, and the Mnarja folk festival is here in June.

    A string of Victorian dams in Wied il-Qlejgħa that fill after winter rain. Restored paths, frogs and dragonflies. Only worth it between December and April when there is water.

    Peer into Il-Maqluba sinkhole

    A 50 metre deep sinkhole beside a chapel in Qrendi, said to have swallowed a sinful village in 1343. A ten minute look on the way to Blue Grotto or Ħaġar Qim.

    A quiet coastal park on the Delimara peninsula with walking trails, a sustainable development centre and views to St Peter's Pool. Free entry, often empty.

    Follow the shore from the luzzu harbour past Fort Delimara to St Peter's Pool and back. About 8 km with plenty of swimming stops and a fish lunch to finish.

    Walk the clifftop from the Blue Grotto viewpoint towards Ħaġar Qim for big sea views and the Blue Grotto boats below. Ice cream and pastizzi at the top.

  • Comino St Mary’s Tower

    Hike the whole of Comino

    Comino

    Walk the dirt tracks around the 3.5 sq km island: Santa Marija tower, the abandoned pig farm, the Crystal Lagoon cliffs, the tiny chapel. Take the ferry from Ċirkewwa and carry water.

    Some of the highest sheer cliffs in the islands, with ancient cart ruts and a dolmen on the plateau. Walk out from Sannat, sit on the edge and watch shearwaters. Free.

    A dramatic clifftop path from Munxar over Sanap Cliffs down to Xlendi Bay for a swim. About 5 km one way. Wildflowers in March and April.

    The Azure Window fell in 2017 but Dwejra still has the Inland Sea, Fungus Rock and wild rock pools. Take the fishermen's boat through the tunnel for a few euro.

    A narrow gorge that ends in a slip of pebble beach between high cliffs. Steps cut into the rock. Superb for snorkelling on a calm day and rarely busy.

    A chequerboard of 350 year old salt pans along the coast past Marsalforn, still harvested in summer. Great for photos at low light. A small hut sells the salt.

    Gozo's other natural arch, at the end of a valley below Għarb. Far fewer visitors than Dwejra ever had and a good spot for a sea swim off the rocks.

    A cave mouth on the Nadur side that frames Ramla's red sand like a postcard. Drive or hike up from the bay. Go early for the light and no crowds.

    Dwejra on Gozo's west coast is a protected dark sky area and one of the few places in Malta where the Milky Way shows. Bring a blanket and pick a night with no moon.

When is the best time to hike in Malta?

October to May. From June to September walk early in the morning or at sunset, and take more water than you think.

Are there hiking groups in Malta?

Yes. The Ramblers' Association of Malta runs walks from October to May, English Café Malta has a group hike from Sliema every Sunday at 11:00, and Din l-Art Ħelwa runs treks. They are listed above when dates are out.

What are the best walks on Gozo?

Sanap Cliffs down to Xlendi, Ta' Ċenċ at dusk, the Xwejni salt pans past Marsalforn, Wied il-Għasri, and a loop of Comino.
